You Can Socialize at an Online High School Too!

Are you considering enrolling in Beacon Academy of Nevada, an online, public, charter high school but you are wondering about how you will socialize with other students?  Fear not!  Here at Beacon Academy, we offer a wide range of opportunities for our students to interact both virtually and face to face.

Beacon Academy provides several different clubs for all of our students to participate in. A few of the clubs that were offered this year included movie club, bowling club, photography club, and many more.  In addition to those clubs, Beacon Academy of Nevada offers supportive groups to help students feel connected to other student in similar situations and to support each other towards their graduation goals.

A couple of the groups that were offered this year to help support students were the Student Parenting group and Gay-Straight Alliance.  Beacon Academy also offers different social activities throughout the school year.  Some of the events that took place this year included dances, field day, walks and a Pi day celebration.  These events take place throughout the state so that all of our students have an opportunity to participate and meet each other.

Another way that students interact with each other is virtually.  This is done in the ‘virtual classroom’.  The classes that students take provide many opportunities for interaction where students are together at the same time communicating through two-way voice over IP, instant messaging, and application sharing.

In addition to clubs and events, Beacon Academy strives to make all students feel connected to the school through caring adults who are invested in each student’s educational success. Beacon Academy does this by providing a mentor for every student who is enrolled.  The mentor is someone who advocates for the student and helps them work towards the goal of earning an accredited Nevada high school diploma.

It is the goal of Beacon Academy of Nevada not only to provide a fulfilling education, but also to provide many opportunities to socialize with each other!

If you are tired of the routine of a brick and mortar school and would like to try a new innovative way to earn your high school diploma, check us out.

Congratulations to the Beacon Academy of Nevada Class of 2013!

Last week we held the graduation ceremony for our Northern Nevada students. The ceremony for our Southern Nevada students will be held this Saturday.  Although we are an online high school, we still provide our students the opportunity to participate in a traditional graduation ceremony. This year we have 60 students of our 95 participating in the Las Vegas ceremony; 5 participated in Reno. This year sees the first class with students who have attended only Beacon Academy of Nevada for their entire Nevada high school career. This year is also sees the largest number of our students who are graduating with advanced diplomas.

Just a reminder for all of the participating graduates- you must have a Beacon Academy cap and gown to participate. Also, please remember that we can only accommodate those guests whom you have tickets for; standing room only is not allowed by the venue.

Final grades will be sent home next week, so keep an eye on those mail boxes! If you are graduating this year, please remember that we will not issue your diploma until your computer has been returned, any pending Proficiency Exam scores have been received, and/or summer school grades have been processed. Your accredited high school diploma will be mailed to the address we have on file so please make sure your contact information is correct.

You’re In Control

Now is the time to take an honest look at how the semester at Beacon Academy of Nevada, virtual online high school from anywhere, went for all students.  Can you look back and say – “Ya I Rocked in my classes!” Or, “Wow, wish I had tried a little harder and submitted more work…”

If you can say you rocked then that is awesome! I would like to see students who are successful in our online program to consider reaching out and helping out other students. Students tend to learn better from other students who can lead by example and give input from a student perspective.

For those students who look back and think – “Wow I wish I had done a little bit more,” maybe put in a little bit more effort to achieve passing grades; I would like to suggest to these students look into summer school. Summer School with Beacon Academy of Nevada is online and runs from June 17 through August 16. Courses are online and count toward your Nevada high school diploma. Summer School is a great way for students to make up the credits they should have earned during the school year. Or, students can use summer school to get ahead in their high school classes.

Students should remember that high school may only be 4 years but the memories will last a lifetime. That’s why it’s important for all students to continue working hard so that 8 years from now they can look back and be proud of their academic performance and not sad because they wished they had done better. Remember you are in control of your destiny!
